By supplying the four major retailers
throughout South Africa, E & C Charcoal has a good distribution network. Transporters, Warehousing and Agents all have excellent experience and proven track records.
E & C Charcoal stated exporting lumpwood charcoal to Europe in 1976 – initially to Germany, France and The Netherlands. The markets were both for industry and leisure (barbeque, or as we call it - braaing). Industry use lumpwood charcoal to manufacture activated charcoal, and also for smelting. The leisure sector has two components (1) Restaurants and (2) Supermarkets for barbeque.
In each European country there are established charcoal importers, who do all the logistics, distribution and warehousing.
E & C now exports both lumpwood charcoal and charcoal briquettes throughout Europe, having established long term relationships in countries from, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium, Switzerland and France, and across the channel in the United Kingdom. We also have markets in the Mediterranean countries of Greece and Israel.
Industry and Restaurants only use lumpwood charcoal whereas the barbeque markets use about half lumpwood charcoal and half charcoal briquettes – all consumers have individual preferences.
E & C has long term shipping relationships with Safmarine/Maersk, and more recently MSC. Our relationship with Safmarine goes back to inception in 1976. All shipping lines have weekly sailings and the journey to Europe is three/four weeks.
These long term relationships in all European countries gives E & C substantial market diversity. All exported charcoal, is as a finished product, packaged and palletized for display in supermarkets for resale. There is not further added value in Europe, other than distribution costs.
